Darren McCarty fan club

Darren McCarty is a Canadian winger on the Detroit Red Wings.

McCarty was drafted by Detroit in 1992. He has been the Red Wings' primary enforcer for most of his career, relying more on his physical presence than his scoring talent. He has won four Stanley Cups with Detroit.

His best statistical season was in 1996-97, when he scored 19 goals and 42 points. He has topped 100 penalty minutes 8 times, including 181 PIM in his rookie season. In the 1997 Conference Finals against Colorado, McCarty got vengeance on cheap shot artist Claude Lemieux for a dirty hit which had occurred the previous season. In 1996, Lemieux had injured McCarty's linemate Kris Draper with a cheap shot that knocked him out of the playoffs. This time, however, McCarty destroyed Lemieux in a fight that set off a bench-clearing brawl that involved everyone including the goalies. McCarty refused to stop punching Lemieux even after he had stopped fighting back and was covering his face. After all had been settled down, the game eventually went to overtime. McCarty scored the game winner in overtime, putting a final touch on the revenge.

McCarty was signed by the Calgary Flames after the lockout, but played only one season. After playing for the Wings' AHL squad in Grand Rapids, he was called up for the 2008 postseason, in which he won his 4th Stanley Cup.

McCarty has 1452 PIM in 745 career games.
