Winning the oldest trophy in golf the second time boosted Harrington’s pride sharing the title with Tiger Woods who held the title from 2005 to 2006 and Arnold Palmer from 1961 to 1962.
The win was more meaningful for Harrington who was suffering from a wrist injury and was only able to practice for nine holes in preparation for the finals.
36-year old Harrington was a bit skeptic at taking the lead at first but when Norman missed a 10-foot par putt on the 12th, Harrington took the lead with a par-3.
Harrington was already two strokes ahead in the 17th but Norman was still hot on his trail and could take the lead with an eagle. A 5-wood ensured a four-stroke lead and finally end the game on the 18th.
Harrington admitted the win was easier this year than last year’s playoff with Sergio Garcia. Harrington’s other opponent, Ian Poulter said that he did his best on the course.
Padraig Harrington’s brilliant play at the Royal Birkdale in Southport placed him in the World No. 3 ranking behind Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
