FC Barcelona take on Schalke 04 in the second leg of their last 8 tie in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday and the pressure is multiplying on the Catalan giants. They are 7 points behind league leaders Real Madrid in La Liga and are out of the Copa del Rey. The only realistic chance that they have to salvage any prestige his season is by winning the UEFA Champions League this season.
Barca go into the second leg tie at Cam Nou with a 1-0 advantage after they won 1-0 in Germany last week. But they cannot take the German giants with ease on Wednesday and club captain Carles Puyol knows that.
Barcelona's defense has stuttered at times in the league this season and Spanish international defender Puyol has cooed out a rallying all for his team mates to turn on the style in the remainder of the season.
Carles Puyol said in a press conference:
"I always think positively and I hope to lift the cup."
"We believe that we can win this trophy, and we want to do so. We respect everyone's opinion, but this season can be a good one. The Champions League is the big one, we can win it, but we can't rule out the Liga either."
"The Champions League is tough, but more realistic for us. But let's not discount the Liga. We've made mistakes and being seven points behind the leader makes it difficult, but I won't rule it out."
Puyol said this to the club's official website:
"We have to play a very serious game, play our football, keep the ball and stay as far away from our goal as we can because they can be very dangerous with crosses into the area. We have to respect our opponents."
"The supporters? The fans will support the team all the way because it is such an important game and the supporters know that."
"We respect the fans 100%. The other day they were fine. They supported us until the final minute and then showed that they were unhappy with the result. That is normal, because we aren't happy with our league results either."
Anyway, Barcelona should win the match tonight. But they would have to confront possibly Manchester United in the semi-finals of he Champions League and that should be far removed from easy.
