Favre Wants to Work According to FOX News

It is as simple as the headline—former Green Bay quarterback and eventual Hall of Famer Brett Favre wants to be the signal caller for a NFL team. The Packer retired from football in March but like many professional players has doubted his decision.

The quarterback opened up while appearing on the FOX program "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren." On the program apparently the longtime Green Bay quarterback said that he retired from the Pack due to pressure from management and that he still wanted to play.

The Controversy

However it's also been reported that Packers general manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy want Favre back on the roster. But Favre senses that his former team wants to move on. Additionally, the QB does not want to be part of the Pack unless he can be the starter. That may just be where the team executives and the former star part.

Favre wants to be released from the team but Green Bay is unwilling to do so. The Packers have noted that they would like him back in a different position.

Favre said that he's 100-percent committed to playing in the NFL. He is still under contract with the Packers and the team would have to release him in order for the football legend to sign with another team.

The Van Susteren interview, which aired on Monday, July 14, 2008, was the first time that Favre answered questions regarding the situation.

Favre's 2007 Season

Although some may think that the aging QB should retire, the fact is that in 2007 the Green Bay signal caller put in one of his best seasons in years. Last year, he completed 66.5-percent of his passes, which was his best rate ever. His 95.7 QB rating was his third best over 17 years. His 4,155 yards in the air also proved to be his third-best single season output. He hit for 28 receptions, while tossing 15 interceptions. His average of 7.8 yards per pass was his finest ever.

The Real Question

The question is not "Should Brett Favre return to the Green Bay Packers?" He should not because the Pack wants to go in another direction and that does not include Favre as the team's starter.

The real question is "Can Favre be a starter for another NFL team?" The answer is "yes." There are plenty of teams that could use this prophetic and tough field general. The Atlanta Falcons are certainly candidates for this seasoned vet. The Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins and Chicago Bears are all in need of a true leader who can make big plays and run an offense with aplomb.

For the Pack, it's about the future. For Favre, it's about now. It's tough for an athlete like Brett Favre to shut it down, especially after such a productive season. The Chicago Bears and Atlanta Falcons might be served best by his spirit, experience and toughness.
