Florida - Bonnie Canino, former women's world champion, is neck deep in debt, still she pushes on for all the women boxers of the world.
Canino is the tournament organizer for the National Women's Golden Gloves competition. The tournament is has her sweat, tears, love, and stress poured into it, and if she gets lucky, she might have financial luck as well. However, that is has not yet happened before.
The fee she requires for registration is the only charge she imposes. She does not mind the debts as she does this in order to give the women in boxing a "chance to shine." It is a fact that these women do not get much of opportunities to do a lot in the sport as there is no hope for Olympic glory, and the professional circuit pay does not give much.
Back in 2003, when she first held the event, she lost a good $9000. This year, she already has $8000, and she pays bills with her own credit cards. While she tries hard not to think about it, she admits that she hopes to at least break it even this time around.
While changes for women boxing are still in the works, it takes a relatively long time before they can take place. For now, Canino has learned to look past those problems, and still believes that these women "should be able to shine now."
