Sorenstam Leaves The US Open with Pride

Sunday night was legend golfer Annika Sorenstam's final moment in the US Open, after announcing to the public a month earlier that the season was to be her last at competitive level, citing other priorities as the reason for her retirement.

Sunday's round at the Interlachen Country Club proved to be quite troublesome for the Swedish golfer, but this did not deter the hundreds of fans from screaming their encouragement and from giving a standing ovation after she put the ball in the hole from 199 yards out.  It was a golf-eagle finish for the 37-year old Swede, who walked across the green and clasped her hands in front of her as her adoring fans gave her a thunderous applause. Then she picked up the ball, kissed it and sent it soaring to the hands on one lucky fan in the stands.

Sunday was Sorenstam's 15th appearance in the US Open and despite the blustery weather conditions she was optimistic, saying, "It's just golf. I'm very, very happy with the way I'm playing. I'm hitting the way I want it and it just didn't happen this week." And although she did not win this time, her spectacular hole-out for an eagle, which playing partner Christie Kerr called the best she has ever seen, will surely go down in US Women's Open history.

Sörenstam has won three US Women's Open Titles out of the 72 LPGA Tour victories that she has garnered over the course of her career. However, she did not leave out the possibility of a return, saying, "I am stepping away for sure by the end of the year. If I come back in a few years it will definitely be the Open."
