Despite the fact that San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson (a.k.a LT), who was plagued by injuries last season, looks to be healthy in 2008, fans should not expect to see the star running back in any preseason games. Why not? To put it quite simply and logically, it's simply too risky. Tomlinson had an off year in 2007. The athletic, tough and extremely smooth runner rushed for 1,474 yards, scoring 15 touchdowns. For most backs that would be a good season but for Tomlinson it was below par.

The amazingly durable back, who in seven seasons with the San Diego Chargers has missed just one game, ran for 1,815 yards in 2006, making 28 touchdowns. Although he played the same number of games in 2007, Tomlinson, who was suffering with an injured knee, carried the ball 33 fewer times than he did in 2006.

LT is considered by many to be the best running back in the NFL. In 2006, he was the league MVP. Along with possessing great running chops, he's a fine receiver, making the guy a huge threat. His ability to run both inside and outside keeps defenses off balance. Additionally, defenders have a tough time with him because he's also a fine pass catcher.

On the run, Tomlinson can fake one way and then reverse direction without missing a beat. As a receiver, he out maneuvers single-man coverage again and again. In the open field, he's tough to stop. He's also been used effectively on trick plays as a passer. Tomlinson's completed eight of 11 passes in his career (72.7-percent), with seven of this eight completions resulting in touchdowns. His QB rating is 154.4.

Even an injured LT is better than no LT at all. What the Chargers and Tomlinson want this season is a year free from injuries. If he can stay healthy, the San Diego running back will once again have a phenomenal season. He may even top 2006, which was his best ever. Don't expect to see him in preseason ball, he's being saved for the 16 regular season games when every yard and game count.
