Some teams just won’t put up with players when they get into trouble. When teams cut players who have been involved in serious legal issues related to bad behavior it sends a message to other players, fans and media. The basic text of that message is, "Ownership is taking a hard line on off field behavior." Overall, that's a good thing as players are held to standards to which the rest of us are held. Here's this week's NFL Rap Sheet.
The New England Patriots released special teams player Willie Andrews after he was arrested for the second time. Andrews, who was arrested on Monday for allegedly pointing a handgun at his girlfriend, was being held without bail. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and illegal possession of a firearm.
The 24 year-old Andrews was also arrested this past year for possession of marijuana with intend to distribute and for driving an unregistered motor vehicle. He plead not guilty in May to those charges.
Baltimore Ravens cornerback Derrick Martin was charged with possession of marijuana when screeners at the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport found three packets of the drug in his suitcase. After being issued a ticket, Martin was not held. He'll receive a summons in the mail for a July 15 appearance at Cleveland Municipal Court. The misdemeanor carries a $150 fine.
Marshall Lynch, a running back for the Buffalo Bills, had his driver's license revoked after pleading guilty to failure to exercise due care toward a pedestrian. On May 31, Lynch struck a 27 year-old Ontario woman at 3:30 am. He was driving his 2008 Porsche Cayenne SUV at the time. Lynch noted that it was raining heavily and he didn't know that he had struck someone. Investigators found that although he left the scene of the accident, Lynch did not do so intentionally. The NFL is monitoring the case regarding the league's personal conduct policy.
