Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has speculated that in the coming years there will no longer be any transfer fees shifting hands between players. The reason? Player power. In an interview with the British national daily The Guardian, the Frenchman was quite reflective on the ways things are moving at the moment when it comes players changing clubs. His own players, notably Alexander Hleb and Emmanuel Adebayor have been linked with moves abroad the Premiership and Wenger believes that the power is consistently shifting towards the players.
Arsene Wenger told The Guardian:
"In the past, you signed and you were there for life. Then you have seen Bosman coming in, then Webster. It looks like the balance goes always towards the player. And if you go to appeal, there is no protection any more. At the moment, after 28 you need only two years. I see the next thing coming is people saying, "Why is it 28 and not 27? That's age discrimination. Why do we have to wait two years after 28 and three years before?"
"If it goes down to two as well, you go from one extreme to the other. It could mean the disappearance of transfer fees."
Indeed Wenger is pretty much right in his speculation and FIFA needs to ponder over the matter. There should be a certain balance in the footballing market but at the moment there seems to a lack of exactly that.
