Dorna Sports S.L. and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, recently signed a new contract, which ensures that the World Championship will continue at the American circuit till at least 2014. Ever since its debut in 2005, the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix has been the largest motorsports event in North Carolina. The most recent race was won by Casey Stoner, who is also the current title holder, while the opening two editions of MotoGP's return stateside were won by Nicky Hayden, 2006 World Champion.
CEO of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca said "This is tremendous news on so many levels. MotoGP is the world's premier motorcycle racing series, and we now have the pleasure of hosting it for another 6 years. Everyone from the fans, the track to the local community will benefit immensely from this extension".
Campbell further thanked the support received from major sponsors such as Red Bull, Yamaha and Parts Unlimited, expressing that the contract extension would not have been possible without their assistance. Yamaha had funded major track improvements, which played a big role in clinching the extension deal.
Dorna CEO, Carmelo Ezpeleta, remarked "We are pleased to continue this relationship between MotoGP World Championship and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The facility has gone to great lengths to improve the experience for both fans and riders, and we look forward to continuing the racing on the Monterey Peninsula for years to come".
In 2007 over 140,000 fans attended the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix. Meanwhile this year's race is slated from July 18th till the 20th and will also include support races from AMA Superbike - Supersport as well as the Red Bull U.S. Rookies Cup.
