Monday, June 23 2008 -- June 23, 2008 -- There was only one WNBA game scheduled for Saturday, June 21.
The Minnesota Lynx were sent to their fifth straight loss by the Houston Comets, 72-65. The Lynx's first quarter was an exercise in futility - they shot only 1 for 15 and scored only 6 points. And considering that...the fact that they only lost by 7 points has to be heartening in a way...
On Sunday, the WNBA had a full schedule.
The Detroit Shock beat the Atlanta Dream 97-76. The Dream also contine to be an exercise in futility -- they have yet to win a game this season.
The Sacramento Monarchs beat the Chicago Sky 82 to 70. Crystal Kelly came off the bench for the Monarchas and scored 13 points. Adrian Williams-Strong added 11.
Jia Perkins scored 12 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter, and Candice Dupree had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Sky, but it was not enough.
The New York Liberty destroyed the Phoenix Mercury, 105-72. What's hurting the Mercury this season is the absence of Penny Taylor - an impact player who was the difference for them last year. Also, Paul Westhead was the coach last year (he left to become an assistance with the Seattle Supersonics)...this year it's Corey Gaines.
And finally, the Los Angeles Sparks defeated the Indiana Fever, 77-63. And in this game, Candace Parker dunked -- only the second time a woman has done so in the WNBA. Her teammate, Lisa Leslie, was the first to dunk, and a handful of players (Leslie, Parker, and Michelle Snow) had done so in college.
