Spanish giants Atletico Madrid have made their first big signing of the off season as they look to spend big again this time in order to secure more success in the 2008-2009 season. Instead of going for some flashy midfielders or big name superstar, Atleti have shrewdly gone for a goalkeeper. Some goalkeeper!
Reports from France suggest that Atletico have signed the French international custodian Gregory Coupet from French powerhouse Olympique Lyonnais on a three-year contract. The 35-year old's representatives flew to Madrid to hold meeting with the third biggest club in Spain and there has been agreement between the two parties.
It has been revealed that Coupet, who featured as the first choice custodian for France in Euro 2008 this summer, shall be a Atletico Madrid player from next season. He has signed a contract that shall keep him at the Vicente Calderon until the end of the 2010-2011 season. Coupet has been at Lyon since 1997 and has won seven French Ligue 1 titles with the French giants.
