The San Diego Padres liked what they saw when they got their Cy Young winner back last night. Jake Peavy pitched six shutout innings and got plenty of help from his offense as the Padres coasted to a 9-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Even though he missed his last five starts with an injury to his throwing elbow, Peavy looked as if he was fresh out of spring training.
Peavy retired 12 straight batters from the 1st through the 4th innings after allowing a leadoff single. He allowed only three hits, did not walk a single batter and struck out four. Of course, the fact that the Padres scored five runs in the first inning gave Peavy a nice cushion to work with in his first start back from the DL. Brian Giles and Adrian Gonzalez both hit homers in the first.
