The Atlanta Braves' pitching rotation lost another big name superstar yesterday, as Tom Glavine was placed on the 15 day DL with soreness in his throwing elbow. It was Glavine's second stint on the DL this season, and may be an indication of the wear and tear that a 22 year career has had on his body. Previous to this season, Glavine had never been placed on the 15 day DL.
The Braves are already without the services of John Smoltz and Mike Hampton, both top quality pitchers, and the loss of Glavine will not help them keep pace in the NL East. The Phillies are playing excellent baseball right now and don't show any signs of letting up, while the Marlins continue to play well. The Mets have too much talent to keep playing at the level they have been playing and should be able to turn it around at some point. None of that speaks well for the playoff chances of the Braves who are struggling just to keep around .500.
