Italy lost their Group C ficture against the Netherlands 3-0 on Monday night and are now bottom of the group. The reigning world champions were comfortably seen off by the Dutch and obviously the Italian camp is not too pleased with the result.
Here are the reactions from the various personnel at the Italy camp. First to the Italian international striker Luca Toni who had a number of half chances in the match:
"Usually when there’s a Last Chance Saloon we tend to bring something out of the bag, so we hope that we can do that again with Romania.
"We had a bad start and a poor performance. Many things didn’t work the way we wanted and Holland played very well, deserving their victory.
"I think we created some good chances in the second half and were unlucky not to score.
"We do have to analyse ourselves here and admit we made a lot of mistakes, but we can learn from them."
Similar thoughts were echoed by his teammate Fabio Grosso who said this after the match:
"We take responsibility for our errors and did react in the second half, but luck was not on our side with our scoring opportunities.
"It isn’t our first defeat and we will certainly get back on track to give 100 per cent against Romania, as that is already going to be a decisive result At this moment in time individual performances don’t matter. We are a team, who today did not prove their worth and must begin to do so from the next game.
"We know that it was a bad match and take responsibility for that, but we also realise there are another two games in front of us and we will try to turn it around.
"We are coming out of a very heavy defeat and must work together in these four days to take a different approach to the Romania tie."
Gianluca Zambrotta was more defensive about his side's defence and remarked:
"When you lose, it is all done together and not just the fault of the defence, midfield or attack. We’ll talk it over with the Coach, but the fact we conceded two goals on the counter-attack is worrying, as it is something that we should not allow to happen.
"Now we must come together again and prepare for the crunch match with Romania, as that is going to be decisive."
Andrea Pirlo was less forgiving about the defeat and blasted his coach Roberto Donadoni's tactics during the match by saying:
"We certainly got off to a bad start. We didn’t intend to play like this, but we ran into an off day. There are another two games now and we have to play better and win.
"If De Rossi had played then I would’ve been further up the field, but there are 23 of us in the squad and the Coach makes his decisions.
"We tried to break them down, but in the first half they always doubled up on the wings and blocked us off.
"In the second half with Grosso and Zambrotta we got to the byline a bit more. We probably should’ve had them on earlier, considering the way the game went, but it’s easy to say in hindsight."
Mixed reactions from the Italy camp then but can they stern their ship and bounce back in their next game against Romania?
