Kubica notches up Maiden Win at an Eventful Canadian Grand Prix

BMW Sauber finally took their long overdue maiden victory in Montreal on Sunday. Robert Kubica led Nick Heidfeld home in a

delightful one-two on a day when early race leader Lewis Hamilton inadvertently crashed his McLaren into Ferrari's Kimi

Raikkonen in a pit-lane collision during the first round of refuelling stops.

Race Beginning: Hamilton sprinted away from pole position, leaving Kubica to fend off Raikkonen.

Lap 17: The safety car neutralised Hamilton's lead when it came out to allow the recovery of Adrian Sutil's Force India,

from a precarious position on the track.

Lap 19: The most dramatic moment of the race saw the first pit-stop take out almost all the World Championship's front

runners. All of the leaders pitted and as Hamilton rejoined, having dropped behind Raikkonen and Kubica after a longer stop,

he ran into the back of the Finn. Raikkonen was stopped by the 'red light' at the pit-lane exit. Hamilton ran into the rear

end of the Ferrari and both the Ferrari and the McLaren were too damaged to continue. Nico Rosberg following Hamilton also

got involved when he ran into the back of Hamilton's McLaren. Although this incident didnt count him out of the race, it did

require an additional pit visit for a new nose, thus dropping the German out of contention despite running fourth early on.

Lap 31: Heidfeld, who had led the race up until now, was preparing to come in for his first and only pit stop in a 'one-stop

strategy'. As he, and other fellow 'one stop' drivers Rubens Barichello (Honda), David Coulthard (Red Bull) and Timo Glock (Toyota), Robert Kubica on a 'two-stop strategy' threatened to take the lead. Although Heidfeld came out of his stop, ahead of Kubica, the lighter BMW zipped past him on this lap.

Lap 44: Fernando Alonso was moving in for the kill, pushing his Renault to the edge. He sneaked past Heidfeld at the hairpin but slide wide on the exit.

Lap 45: After his failed overtaking manouver in the last lap, a determined Alonso decided to push the pedal a fraction earlier and it was this that led to him spin off the track and out of the race, on turn 2.

Standings: Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld did wonders for the Swiss-German outfit by cruising home to a 1-2 podium finish. David Coulthard made the most of the numerous bunglings up front and romped home at Third. Timo Glock snatched a wonderful fourth place with a strong ad confident drive and ended up just ahead of the scarlet Ferrari of Filipe Massa. Massa's race had been marred by refuelling problems although he did come back brilliantly into the race to overtake Barichello and Kovalainen, together, at the hairpin, on his way to a 5th place finish.

Jarno Trulli capitalised on Barochello's late error and raced ahead of the Brazilian for a sixth place finish while Barichello made it home in seventh. Sebastian Vettel again showed off a strong performance to come in at the last points' place, at number eight. Kovalainen came in at ninth spot ahead of Nico Rosberg. Jenson Button, who started from the pitlane after making some suspension setup changes, came in at number 11.

Barring the high profile crashes that occured on the pitlane exit, and Fernando Alonso's spin out, Sebastien Bourdais and Mark Webber also failed to finish the race after similar problems.

Giancarlo Fisichella crashed his Force India while Williams' Kazuki Nakajima was amongst the points before damaging his front wing on Button and then tobogganing into the pit wall when his front wing folded back under his wheel. The other Renault of Nelson Piquet spun and retired with an unspecified mechanical problem.

As a result of his first win, Kubica now leads the world championship fight with 42 points to Hamilton and Massa's 38 and Raikkonen's 35.

BMW Sauber's great day jumped them back to second in the constructors’ stakes with 70 points to Ferrari's 73 and McLaren's 53.
