Friday, June 6 2008 -- The UEFA Euro 2008 finals is now barging into out houses and it's high time that one ponders on the teams and the groups that they are in.
This is what Group A looks like:
1.Czech Republic
2.Portugal
3.Switzerland
4.Turkey
On paper, Portugal should be the favourites to win the group with their star player Cristiano Ronaldo set to take the international arena by storm. Turkey and the Czech Republic should fight for the second place with Switzerland counting more on home support than on their players.
This is what Group B looks like:
1.Austria
2.Croatia
3.Germany
4.Poland
Germany ought to be everyone's favourites to win the group but who would qualify as runners-up? Croatia have a decent squad and so do Poland while Austria have home support.
This is what Group C looks like:
1.France
2.Italy
3.Netherlands
4.Romania
This is the proverbial group of death as all the four teams are very strong. World champions Italy have lost their captain and defender Fabio Cannavaro for the entire competition with an ankle injury but are very strong in all departments. This will France's first major international competition since 1998 when there will be no Zinedine Zidane but they are one of the favourites to win the competition this year. The Dutch have a well balanced side and Romania have their talisman Adrian Mutu.
This is what Group D looks like:
1.Greece
2.Russia
3.Spain
4.Sweden
Greece are the reigning European champions while Russia have Guus Hiddink as their coach. Spain have the most talented squad in the entire competition while Sweden have recalled Henrick Larsson back from international retirement.
Let the battle begin!
