Thursday, June 5, 2008 -- The Chicago Cubs finally lost last night, as the San Diego Padres outlasted them in a pitching duel that saw only 11 hits total. The Padres scored in the first, off Sean Hairston's leadoff homerun. Greg Maddux allowed only three hits and one run over seven innings. He was very efficient as well, throwing 47 of his 69 pitches for strikes. Unfortunately, because the Cubs tied it in the 4th and San Diego did not score again until the 8th, Maddux only got the no decision.
Cubs pitcher Ted Lilly had a decent outing himself, giving up both Padres runs on seven hits through 7 1/3 innings. Heath Bell was perfect in the 8th and Trevor Hoffman allowed only one runner to reach as he recorded his 12th save of the season.
The Cubs play the Dodgers tonight in LA, while San Diego hosts the New York Mets.
