John Smoltz returned to the Atlanta Braves lineup last night as a closer, hoping that his 41 year old right shoulder would hold up better in that role than it had when he was a starter. Smoltz closed for the Braves from 2001-2004, accumulating 154 saves, and becoming the only pitcher in history to have 200 wins and 150 saves.
Unfortunately, Smoltz' return was less than perfect as he gave up two runs on a two out single that gave the Florida Marlins a 4-3 lead in the ninth inning. The Braves rallied, scoring in the bottom half of the inning to send it to extra innings, and winning on Yunel Escobar's home run in the 10th.
Smoltz faced five batters before giving up the go ahead run, and looked slightly uncomfortable with a new three quarters throwing motion which took away his very effective split finger fastball.
