Donaire Keeps His Flyweight Title

Wednesday, February 17, 2010 -- It was a victory against Manuel Vargas last Saturday that allowed Nonito Donaire to keep his flyweight title. Vargas went down on the third round with a solid right uppercut after going from side to side before landing the finished punch.

"It was a matter of relaxing and working my game plan," Donaire said. "I went side to side, leading with the jab, then landed that hard uppercut."

Donaire is a Filipino professional boxer who was supposed to fight for the flyweight title with Gerson Guerrero but the later failed to pass his pre-flight physical examination.

Nonito Donaire grew up in the Philippines but moved to the States when he was ten. He is rated by The Ring as the number 6 pound-for-pound champion best boxer in the world. He is currently the IBF and IBO Flyweight Champion of the world. In the Philippines, Donaire went to the same school attended by boxing champ Manny Pacquiao.

The 27-year old Donaire, with this win has improved with 23-1 with 15 knock-outs is being prepped for more fights by Bob Arum, who is also Pacquiao’s promoter. Those on the list for consideration for Donaire’s next fight include Fernando Montiel, Jorge Arce and Vic Darchinyan. With Donaire’s desire to move up in weight, Montiel could be the next best option for a match.
