Earlier, India had already been struggling with the fitness issues surrounding the four batsmen, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh and even Sachin Tendulkar. Dravid had been hit by a bouncer and had to retire hurt, whereas Laxman missed the second Test as well. Yuvraj Singh was a part of the second game but did not bat because of a hand injury, whereas Tendulkar hurt himself while diving for a catch.

It remains to be seen who will replace the aforementioned players in case they do become fit for the game.
