It’s been a couple of weeks since our last installment of the NHL Top Plays, here on sportspundit.com, but that doesn’t mean the hockey stopped. The players have kept right on playing, and here’s my picks for the top ten plays for the past couple of weeks.
10. Sidney Crosby gets his 2nd hat trick of the year against the New York Rangers, on free hat night at Mellon Arena.
9. Another Penguin makes the list, this time it’s goalie Marc-Andre Fleury flashing the glove against Montreal on Wednesday night.
8. Niklas Hagman has caught fire in Toronto lately, scoring 7 goals in his last 7 games. He scores a beauty here, tying the game for the Leafs and eventually sending it to overtime. Unfortunately for Toronto, Dwayne Roloson made 58 saves for the Islanders that night to take home the overtime win.
7. Marty Brodeur broke the NHL record for minutes played on Friday against the Bruins. Zach Parise did his part in the shootout to make sure that Marty got to remember this night as a winning one all around.
6. Dany Heatley certainly seems to like his new digs in San Jose, and his linemate Joe Thornton isn’t complaining. Already known as one of the most prolific passers in the game today, Thornton gives Heatley a couple of beauties as Dany gets his first hat trick as a Shark. I think I could have scored the first two of these – all Heater had to do was have his stick on the ice.
5. TJ Oshie is off to a bit of slow start this year, but try telling that to Ilya Bryzgalov after Oshie pulled off this little bit of magic.
4. Phil Kessel has been on fire since coming back from shoulder surgery. He puts a grat move on the Florida defender and snipes it past Tomas Vokoun, who has been playing at the top of his game all season.
3. Steve Stamkos scores what some are calling the goal of the year, following his shot and batting the puck out of the air while sliding across the ice.
2. This is my favorite goal so far this year. David Perron pulls the puck through his own legs, then all the way from backhand to forehand to beat the keeper. In the words of the announcer – “this is sick!”
1. Ryan Miller has been the best goalie in the league so far this year, bar none. Fresh off a shutout in Toronto last night, Miller leads all goalies in save percentage, and is the only keeper with a GAA under 2.00. Here he robs Rod Brind’amour with a diving save across the crease.
