England women take the honors

The event

2009 proves to be an outstanding year for the women cricket team of England. This team has enjoyed playing cricket till date and was recognized with the Sunday Times Sportswomen of the year awards which was held at the David Beckham Academy in London.

The players who were presented with the awards

The England team was awarded with the team of the year for second successive year, where Holly Colvin got the Young Sportswoman of the year award. Sussex player, Colvin won the UK Sport Young Sportsperson of the year award. She is a popular spinner who became the youngest cricketer to have represented England, after getting selected for the Ashes series in 2005 when she was only 15 years old. Rachael Heyhoe – Flint was presented with the CCPR Lifetime Achievement Award. Heyhoe is known as one of the most popular female cricketers in England to have represented her country for over 22 years and have been its captain between 1966 and 1978.

Major achievements of this team

Some of the matches that this women’s team won were the ICC Women’s World Cup in March 2009 in Australia, the ICC World Twenty20 in England in the month of June and the Ashes where this team beat Australia with 4-0 in a one day series.

The Captain of this team, Charlotte Edwards, who is leading this team on a tour of the West Indies, views her opinions. For her, it has been an extraordinary year for the entire team and the success followed because of mere hard work and dedication from the team players. Armed with loads of confidence so far, the team is planning to look forward and continuing such progress out in the West Indies presently and are also building up their gear for the World Twenty20 in April and the World Cup in 2013.
