Friday, November 13, 2009 -- The first women’s T20 match between West Indies and England was played in St. Kitts, England. The West Indies team surprised the current World Cup and World Twenty20 champions by clinching a 4-wicket win against the home side.
The start of the match was delayed by 3 hours due to rain, after which the West Indies won the toss and placed England to bat. The openers for the hosts, Danielle Hazell and Charlotte Edwards started alow due to the damp field. The team lost early wickets and Hazell left for the dressing room for an lbw by Stafanie Taylor. Taylor also grabbed Jenny Gunn later in the innings. The captain, Edwards contributed 24 runs but could not help boost the team to get a high score. The team collapsed rapidly after losing Beth Morgan for a run-out and ended up making just 112 losing 8 wickets.
The current wicket keeper for West Indies, Aguilleira was unable to play and was replaced by Shermaine Campbelle. Stefanie Taylor grabbed 3 wickets and Anisa Mohammed sent 2 players packing off the field.
After the West Indies openers came to bat, the team failed to get the required momentum and suffered a loss of 2 wickets for just 22 runs. But Cordel Jack and Pamela Lavine lifted the team’s spirits and the team reached a total of 91 runs for 2 wickets. Just when things had started to roll, Isa Guha from England struck like a lightning bolt and took 3 wickets in quick succession. With requiring 16 runs from 17 balls, the match was going in for a nerve-biting finish. Shanel Daley scored the winning runs to grant her team a victory and a 1-0 lead in the series.
