Andy Roddick withdrew from the French Open which began Sunday due to a right shoulder injury, although he hopes to make use of the time preparing for Wimbledon, which starts June 23. He recently retired from the semi-finals of the Rome Masters on May 10 and sat out the Hamburg Masters which were held last week. However, Roddick was expected to play at the World Team Cup in Duesseldorf.

John Roddick, his brother and US captain of the World Team Cup, said in a statement last Monday, May 19th, 2008, that the tennis star was suffering from an upper back injury similar to what he suffered from in Rome.

His brother further went on to add that there’s no cause for worry, but confirmed that Roddick needed to rest for a couple of days.

Andy Roddick won his only Grand Slam title in the 2003 US Open. He lost to Federer twice and again suffered another loss at the US Open.

Recent success includes two titles in San Jose and Dubai. According to his brother, his performance this year was a cause for optimism even before the French Open began. "He felt really comfortable on the clay this year, so he really liked his chances of doing better than he has, and he did it in Rome. He was optimistic about his draw in France and wanted to come over and try to play well. So for him it's disappointing." However, John Roddick expressed his hope that the tennis star will be in top shape for the grass court tournament to be held at Queen’s Club, a key warm-up for Wimbledon.
