Tiger Woods had arthroscopic knee surgery on April 15, 2008 and decided on Friday, May 23 that he would not be ready to play in the Memorial tournament, held annually at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio during the first week of June.
Woods is a three-time winner at the Memorial, but simply did not believe he would be ready to play next week.
The course was designed by Jack Nicklaus. It is called the Memorial because it used to be played Memorial Day weekend, but Columbus, Ohio rainy May weather typically interfered, and now it is played the first weekend of June.
This year's tournament begins Thursday, May 29, 2008.
Woods intends to play in the U. S. Open in August.
