Inter Win Title Again!

Inter Milan clinched their third consecutive scudetto on Sunday after defeating Parma 2-0 in the last match of the Italian Serie A season; Parma are relegated to the Serie B.

Going to the last round of matches in the 2007-2008 Serie A season, Inter held a solitary point lead over their nearest challengers AS Roma. Both Inter and Roma were on their travels, Inter to Parma and Roma to Catania with both Parma and Catania needing a victory to assure themselves top flight status for next season.

It was Roma who made the breakthrough and did so as early as the ninth minute of the match when a brilliant Mirko Vucinic run through two defenders gave him some space, and he fired from a tough angle past the goalkeeper and in off the post - a brilliant goal - to give Roma the lead.

Inter Milan didn't make any impact until the second half when coach Roberto Manicini brought on a certain Zlatan Ibramovic came on 5 minutes into the second period. The Swedish international conjured up an immediate impact as he gave the Nerazzurri the lead just after the hour mark.

Then on the 79th minute Ibramovich scored the second of the match to wrap up a 2-0 win over Parma, who went down to the Serie B after Catanai grabbed a life-savinh equalizer against Roma. The match between Roma and Catania ended in a 1-1 draw and Inter win the Serie A title by 3 points.

Inter Milan captain Javier Zanetti said after the match:

"The squad answered its critics. After the derby everyone became Siena fans, then after that game they all wanted Roma to win the Scudetto, but we are the ones celebrating right now, yet again.

"This was the Scudetto we struggled with the most, but the team believed until the end.

"Inter showed great maturity. We never thought that we could lose the title. There was some worry, obviously, as Roma had a wonderful campaign and deserve praise, but Inter proved they are the best."

But the AS Roma thought otherwise. Midfielder Daniele de Rossi pointed out the referring help Inter received throughout the season and said:

"I may be bitter, but I will not forget that in the two months when Inter had the most difficulties, they won the way everyone saw.

"I did not want to say this before the last game because I didn’t like to further charge up the decisive Sunday, but those are my views on this season."

But the bottomline is: Inter Milan are the 2007-2008 Italian champions!
