Monday, July 20, 2009 -- The English women’s cricket team has much to celebrate post their win over the Aussies for yet another time. Despite of suffering at 39-3, England eventually achieved the 273 runs target in the match that was reduced to 53 overs due to rain.
Charlotte Edwards shun as usual with her 53 runs haul while left-arm spinner Holly Colvin impressed with the ball, bowling 3 for 59.
The recent victory is just another feather in the cap for England following their 50-over World Cup title and the World Twenty20 title of this year.
Speaking of England’s glory, Worcestershire chief executive Mark Newton expressed that English women have raised the profile of women’s cricket after retaining the Ashes. As Worcestershire did not charge for the four-day match, Newton said, “There were more people than I expected. An international match on your ground always raises the profile of the club.”
“We had around 1,500 to 1,600 people on the Friday, most of them were children, and around 700 people for the other days which was certainly more than four years ago. The main thing was to try and raise the profile of women’s cricket throughout the county.”
