Friday, July 3, 2009 -- 45-year old Jim Leyritz may not be a Major League Baseball player anymore, but he was in the news for all the wrong reasons. Leyritz was arrested on Thursday in South Florida and charges were filed against him for domestic battery against his ex-wife.
With just two months to go before Leyritz's DUI manslaughter trial begins, the former New York Yankees player had been out on bail but with this incident now cropping up, the judge ruled that the release conditions had been violated by Leyritz's actions and that he should remain jailed.
Leyritz's ex-wife, Karrie, first told the police office, who arrived first on the scene, that Leyritz had struck her twice on her face over an argument over child support. He then pushed her to the ground for writing a check without his permission.
Later, she changed her statement saying that Leyritz had hauled her out of bed and pushed her up against the wall. Leyritz, meanwhile, told the police that Karrie was drunk and the injuries were mainly due to her own inability to get back at Jim, when the latter was trying to evict her from their shared house.
The couple's three children were all asleep when the police came to their home.
According to J. David Bogenschutz, he will be asking the judge, by next week, to reconsider the decision about the bail. Leyritz is meant to go on trial in September for driving under influence of alcohol and causing a fatal crash with his car in December 2007.
The former major leaguer was part of 6 teams in his career that spanned 11 years. His most memorable moment was when he hit a home run in Game 4 of the 1996 World Series to give the New York Yankees a much needed win against the Atlanta Braves.
