Thursday, July 2, 2009 -- Five-time champion Venus Williams is now on the hot seat for the Wimbledon semifinals after beating currently World’s No. 14, Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland last Tuesday. The younger sister, Serena Williams who is a two-time champion also grabbed the seat from the tennis player from Belarus, Victoria Azarenka.
"They are both playing super-well. They're playing 'The Williams Way,"' their father, Richard Williams, said. "And when you're playing 'The Williams Way,' it's very difficult for anyone to touch you."
On the semifinals this coming Thursday, Venus will be across the court from Dinara Safina of Russia and Serena from Elena Dementieva also from Russia. If the sibling wins their respective matches, they’ll be vying for the title in the finals on Saturday.
"I would love it to be a Williams final," Venus said, "and so would she."
On the other hand, Safina and Dementieva hold no record of any major titles. But as Safina thinks about the upcoming event, she said, "I cannot go on court thinking I lost already. No, definitely, I think I have a chance there."
When asked about her upcoming match with Serena, Dementieva replied with a brave tone, "I just want to see how tough I can be out there against her… Just looking for some good fight."
If the sisters would beat both Russians in the semifinals, it will be their 8th match against each other in the finals.
"It will be. I'll go home because I can't watch," their dad said. "I think they both definitely make it to the final."
