Tuesday, June 30, 2009 -- The tournament favorite, Venus Williams, a five-time champion, defeated Kateryna Bondarenko while wearing a strap on her left knee. When questioned about the strap, she responded “Just for support… What happened was that I needed some support, and then I went and got the support, and then I wore it in the match. I'll be wearing it in doubles, too. So it's working out. I mean, I think all the players might start wearing it because it's so supportive.”
She also wore the strap while playing doubles with sister Serena, beating Virginie Razzano and Aravane Rezai.
The player however, appeared relaxed and focused as she moved around the court, slamming three aces and quick returns, making it her 16th win in a row at Wimbledon.
"Oh my gosh, that's a great statistic for me," she said. "I know a lot of people have done better than that, but that's a great achievement. I want to make it more."
The men's category, the former World No. 1 now 6th in the world, Andy Roddick defeated Igor Kunitsyn from Russia.
"It was comfortable most of the time," Roddick said. "I played my best set by far in the fourth set."
No. 3 British professional player, Andy Murray, defeated Ernests Gulbis, the world no. 74th, in straight sets in the second round.
