Wednesday, June 24, 2009 -- The No. 2-seeded Roger Federer, had his first match at Wimbledon last Monday inside an 87-year-old stadium, sporting a polished new warm up outfit which made the crowd cheered for approval.
Since winning the French Open, Federer fought hard in the opening match but recovered and dominated from there on. "I'm very happy with my first round," Federer said. "I thought it was a very solid performance."
Serena Williams, No. 2-seeded, a runner-up to her sister a year ago, only lost nine service points and beat Neuza Silva. "I could have played a ton better, especially on key points," Williams said. "That's a usual feeling for me from first round to the finals. I'm really insatiable. I always want more."
Maria Sharapova, after her shoulder surgery, won the final four games of the first set and beat Viktoriya Kutuzova. "She's a very aggressive player," Sharapova said. "She went for many shots very freely and loosely, and I was just trying to hold on."
After being eliminated in the French Open last month, 17th -seeded James Blake went to a tiebreaker and lost to Andreas Seppi.
"I still feel like I can play with anyone in the world, but it's just for some reason lately it has been very inconsistent," Blake said. "I know I still have the ability. It's just frustrating, because it's happening at big tournaments where I'm having my not-so-good performances."
