Unlike for example ice hockey, it can be played all over the world, and with fairly cheap equipment. American football hasn't quite taken off outside America, a lot of people feel that the rules are too complicated. Plus not a lot of kids in the poor neighbourhoods of South America are likely to be able to afford the necessary equipment to play American football.
To make a long story short, there isn't really another sport that could challenge soccer as the world's most popular sport.

Rugby requires more brute force than technical skills. Football is more about combining finesse, brute force, technical skill and tactics. Man's game??? I would like to see you play 70 minutes of field hockey on astro turf and then tell me that Rugby is the only "Man's Game".
