Rose set to become Rookie of the Year

Thursday, April 16, 2009 -- Amongst the Rookies, Derrick Rose is about to become the Rookie of the Year. He is a guard in Chicago and would become the 5th Rookie of the Year in the history of Chicago. The former players who have achieved this distinction in this team are Walt Bellamy in 1961-62, Terry Dischinger in 1962-63, Michael Jordan in 1984-85 and Elton Brand in 1999-2000. In the current season, he has the following statistics – he has played 80 games and has 37 minutes per game, 16.8 points per game, 3.9 rebounds per game, 6.3 assists per game, 0.8 steals per game and 0.2 blocks per game. His field goal percentage is 0.475, 3-point field goal percentage is 0.222 and free throw percentage is 0.789.

Second spot

In the race to the Rookie of the Year, the second rank is held by O.J. Mayo of Memphis. His figures are as follows – 81 games, 38 minutes per game, 18.4 points per game, 3.7 rebounds per game, 3.2 assists per game, 1.1 steals per game, 0.2 blocks per game, 0.438 field goal percentage, 0.383 3-point field goal percentage and 0.875 free throw percentage. Since November, his field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage and points per game were the highest in April, which were 45.5, 41.9 and 19.6 respectively. He now intends to use the summer by working out with his teammates in Memphis instead of returning to the limelight in Los Angeles.
