Sunday, March 15, 2009 -- Andy Roddick was the United States’ bet to win this year’s Davis Cup, and he did not disappoint anybody.
Roddick, the sixth player from the top, is now just a stone throw away from sealing the deal at the Davis Cup series. If he felt pressured by his teammates as well as the guarantee from Mike Bryan that he would win, Roddick sure did not show any signs of nervousness or whatsoever.
According to Roddick, “I was sitting there putting my shoes on and (Bryan) goes, ‘I guarantee a victory,’ I kind of progressively got tighter and tighter as he was talking. But I guess it would have been easy to blame him if I had lost.”
Roddick had defeated Stanislas Wawrinka from Switzerland in a straight set match, giving the United States a first round win last Sunday. The series runs on a best-of-five scheme, and Roddick’s victory has more or less guaranteed a less dramatic final.
However, despite his performance, Roddick does not seem to be that impressed with his record. Still, his 31st win at the Davis Cup put him in first place, nudging Andre Agassi into the second slot in the United States, but still 10 wins behind John McEnroe.
