Cowboys release Adam "Pacman" Jones

Wednesday, January 7, 2009 -- News is out that Adam “Pacman” Jones has been released by the team that was determined to give him yet one more chance to right his life. The Cowboys released Jones on Tuesday, January 7, after new allegations surfaced concerning the cornerback when he was with the Tennessee Titans.

Jones was released after the Dallas Cowboys, the NFL and Jones attorney were contacted by Outside the Lines reporter John Barr. Barr is set to air a piece on Sunday in which a man from Atlanta alleges that Jones arranged for him and another man to be targeted and shot at.

Jones was in trouble this season, being suspended for six games after violating the league’s player conduct policy when he got into a fight with a team bodyguard at a Dallas hotel. During his suspension, he took part in an alcohol rehab program.

Jones had a disappointing season with the Cowboys. He had no interceptions on defense and in his role as a punt return man, he averaged just 4.6 yards per attempt.

It’s unclear if Jones' release is related entirely to his poor performance. The team made no statement as to why it decided to release the cornerback. Team owner Jerry Jones was unavailable for comment, and as of press time, coach Wade Phillips and linebacker Greg Ellis, the team's players' union rep, had not returned queries left by The Associated Press.

Prior to becoming a Cowboy, Jones was involved in 12 situations in which police were summoned and he was arrested six times. He was originally alleged to be involved in the shooting that Outside the Lines is set to report on this Sunday. Police did not pursue the investigation. The corner was the first round pick of the Titans in 2005.
