Sunday, January 4, 2009 -- Despite the dull economy, Manny Pacquiao had a surprisingly impressive career for 2008. So good in fact, the he even manage to round off the year with a win against ‘Golden Boy’ Oscar de la Hoya. He was also named as boxer of the year several times by different organizations.
However, Pacquiao’s wins are not all his own. He also attributes his recent boxing glory to the relentless efforts of his trainer Freddie Roach. Ring Magazine and Yahoo Sports named Roach as Trainer of the Year.
It is difficult to imagine Pacquiao without Roach. Undoubtedly, the champion’s career may not have been as glistening if he didn’t have Roach at his side. The trainer’s skill and knowledge of the fight has helped him map out an effective battle plan for the boxer.
The Filipino fighter has been under Roach’s care for seven years. During that time, the two of them has managed to attain 17 wins in 21 fights. He has also instrumental in Pacquiao’s 2008 record of 3-0 in three weight divisions.
The tandem’s biggest challenge came in the form of De La Hoya. But, Roach was not wavered, he was confident in Pacquiao’s skill and he expertly predicted that De La Hoya no longer had it in him to win against Manny.
As 2009 rolls in, both Pacquiao and Roach are looking forward to another exceptional boxing ring. A few of opponents in their sights include Ricky Hatton and Edwin Valero.
