Sunday, December 28, 2008 -- Thousand Oaks, California. – Fijian Vijay Singh winning his first Tiger Woods' charity event and finishing at 11-under 277 was “very unexpected” according to him. He added, “I just hung in there. I thought Jim Furyk was playing so well and Anthony, so I just had to keep pace.”
Singh did not show signs of rusting when even at the age of 46 and after 3 months of taking a break for his injuries to heal, he still managed to win the event.
He was able to run off 3 straight birdies early on the back at nine then closed the game by holing a 10-footer with a 5-under 67 for a one-shot victory over Steve Stricker.
When asked how he won, he said, "I was just hanging in there. I figured if I shot 67 or 68, I would be right there with a chance."
The victory added $1.35 million to his earnings this year, increasing it to $18 million before the year ends. His earnings this season include $6.6 million for the PGA Tour and $10 million bonus from the FedEx Cup.
Recognizing the fact that his age has worn his game, he said, “I don't know if I can keep doing this for another four, five or six years.” However, Singh has not shown signs of interest in retiring from golfing as he added, “…but I'm going to try.”
While waiting for the others to finish, Singh talked with Woods where he kiddingly told the latter "Don't come back too soon. Take another year off."
Singh became number one for in the Official World Golf Rankings after he overtook Woods in September 2004. He ended Wood’s reign for 264 consecutive weeks on top. Woods became number one again in 2005 but Singh took it back two weeks later. Woods, however, managed to reclaim the top spot again later in 2005 after he won the Masters and continued to hold it until the present.
