Baseball fans; who are the players you should be looking for this season? Here are just a few.
Last year did you ever think that Freddy Sanchez would become a batting champion? Too bad for the Red Sox who not only traded Sanchez but also Cla Meredith who ended up being one of the best lockdown relievers.
Before we venture into the possible stars of this season let's do a little revisiting of last year. Remember Michael Cuddyer of Minnesota and Alex Rios of Toronto? How about J.J. Putz of Seattle and Adrian Gonzalez of San Diego? These guys definitely emerged as breakout players of the 2006 season.
Now onto this year. Who are we looking at to become the standouts? Let's start with Daisuke Matsuzaka. Matsuzaka is 26 years old and plays for the Red Sox. Some may say there are many reasons that this guy might face a few struggles in his first year in the majors. O.K. so the season is going to be longer, there is one fewer day off in between starts, he will be facing better hitters as well as cultural and language transitions. Good luck to those teams who are going to come up against this pitcher for the first time and the second and third times won't be any picnic either. Another great thing about Daisuke is that he is young and hopefully has years ahead of him.
Next up is Howie Kendrick. He is 23 and is playing for the Angels. Now, while it's true that he had his problems when L.A. gave him 290 at-bats last season while having him play mostly first base which was a position he had never even played before. Who wouldn't struggle a little when put in that situation? Keep your eye on this guy because he could end up winning multiple batting titles.
Don't forget about Brandon McCarthy who is 23 and plays for the Rangers. It just could be that McCarthy's changeup will be the pitch that will set him apart.
There you have just a few guys to pay attention to as the 2007 baseball season gets underway.
