Thursday, October 30 2008 -- Eighth-seeded and defending champion David Nalbandian, together with top seeded Roger Federer and gold medallist Rafael Nadal finally reached the third round of the Paris Masters last Wednesday.
Nalbandian defeated German player Nicolas Kiefer in 7-6 (5), 6-3 score; Federer saved two set points in his tie breaking game against Robin Soderling in 6-4, 7-6 (7); and Nadal won over French player Florent Serra in a 6-2, 6-4 record.
Federer claimed that Soderling was giving his best serves which suit the indoors. Despite his facing a crucial moment in the court, Federer was nevertheless happy and relieved with the game results. He was surprised that Soderling did not return a bit better yet still contented that he was making good services since the U.S. Open.
Soderling took home the victory last Sunday in the Lyon Grand Prix but lost another game against Federer. This was his eighth so far against him. He was on serve at the 6-5 set point but unfortunately hit a forehand wide. He did get another big chance at the next point but his long forehand failed him, giving Federer the match point.
Federer is no doubt enjoying the last part of this season. It may have appeared tough, but his victory at the Swiss Indoors in Basel added to his U.S. Open championship title and doubles Olympic gold medal.
On the other hand, Nadal is looking forward to play for the first time against number 16 Gael Monfils of France. He expressed that Monfils is playing favorably and has been quite aggressive on the courts.
Nalbandian will face fellow Argentine Juan Martin del Potro for the third time. He finds it quite strange to be playing against someone whom he knew very well. Nalbandian defeated del Potro in the Swiss Indoors last week at the semi-finals just after del Potro won the third round of the Madrid Masters.
