Friday, October 17 2008 -- Stockholm, Sweden, October 12, 2008 - Top-seeded David Nalbandian capped the week off with a strong victory over Swedish home-favorite Robin Soderling to bag the Stockholm Open title. This is the Argentine tennis player’s second victory in the season and 9th career win.
Nalbandian also made the records with this victory, becoming the first Argentine to win in singles in the history of the tournament. He had earlier won his first title for the season in Buenos Aires in February but unfortunately lost his next match in Acapulco, Mexico a week later.
Both players played strong and held their serve until the seventh game when Nabaldian broke with a 4-3 lead. The Argentine finally sealed his win when he made another break after Soderling’s double fault on match point. Despite his win the Argentine was gracious enough to give his Swiss opponent enough credit for a tough and strong match. "I was supposed to win in the second set when I was a break up, but he started playing better under the pressure,” Nalbandian said after the game.
The week would have been perfect except for the top-seeded Argentine’s defeat in one set in five matches on the hard courts.
Sorderling had previously lost the Stockholm final to Mardy Fish back in 2003 and is slated to proceed to Spain to defend his Madrid Masters title.
