Tuesday, October 14 2008 -- Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has thanked the United supporters for forgiving him after the sumemr transfer saga in which he publicly insisted that he wanted to leave the club for mighty Real Madrid.
Ronaldo was involved in one of the biggest transfer sagas in world football in the summer when he told again and again that he wanted to join Real Madrid. This just days after he had led Man United to the Premier League and European Cup double in the 2007-2008 season.
The situation was resolved in the eleventh hour only after Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson came into the equation and persuaded Ronaldo to stay on at Old Trafford.
The United supporters were understandably annoyed and angry at Ronaldo's behaviour. But they now seem to have tempered their disgruntlement towards the apple of their eye, at least according to the player himself.
Ronaldo told the British tabloid The Sun:
"In the game when I came back against Villarreal I wasn’t nervous but just a bit excited to see how the fans would react to me.
"Thank God things went well. This shows people have not forgotten all the good things we’ve done together and I’m very happy with that."
