In his website, Federer apologized to his fans, saying that he badly needs the rest so he could reclaim the No.1 spot in the Tennis world rankings. Being second best next to Rafael Nadal has pushed Federer to take a breather and re-empower his play.

In his website, Federer explained his decision, saying, “I feel fortunate to be healthy again, but I want to remain at the top of the game for many more years to come and go after the No. 1 ranking again.” There was no specific date as to when the world’s greatest tennis player is slated to come back on the playing field; only that fans could expect him on the tennis court before the year ends. “At this point, I am not sure when I will be ready to play again, but I hope to be back at some point before the end of the year” Federer said.

Tournament director Per Hjertquist said he and his staff were very sad and disappointed after receiving the official word from the player himself, and they are now having a very difficult time in finding another pro to fill Federer’s shoes – which leave quite a gigantic void.

Rafael Nadal, the greatest rival of Federer and the world’s No. 1 this year, had earlier declined the invitation to play in Stockholm. Without Federer on the roster, David Nalbandian is the highest ranking tennis pro in the tournament, as he is ranked 7th in the world rankings.
