Errors creep into Ferrari Gameplan

Wednesday, October 1 2008 -- Qualifying was special for Felipe Massa as he burnt rubber and propelled Ferrari into a confident position at the inaugural Singapore Grand Prix. However, instead of celebrating an outstanding win, the entire Ferrari contingent will be ruing the fact that vital errors during a pit-stop cost them the entire race as well as the lead in the constructors' championships.

Massa started exactly where he had left qualifying, in the lead and quick. He was moving away from Hamilton before his first pit-stop put a stop to his night-time reveling. Given the green light a moment too early, Massa was out of the pits with the fuel hose still attached to the car. At the end of the pit lane, Massa had to wait for his mechanics to come and pull the hose off. He got a drive-through penalty as a result of his dangerous exit. That, and a late puncture, meant that he would finish the race in 13th spot, and that too after a wonderful showing for the entire race weekend before that moment.

"It's hard to deal with losing in this fashion a race that was within our grasp, with a car that was just the way I wanted it," said Massa. "We had a good strategy and all the signs were there that we could get a one-two finish. But things can change in a moment and that's what happened today. At the pit stop, one of the guys made a mistake. But we are only human. Each one of us always tries to do our best and these things can happen."

Ferrari still looked good to pick up four points after Kimi Raikkonen was cruising home at 5th. But Raikkonen decided to go in for the fourth place and eventually went into the wall with four laps to go.

"I was trying to attack Glock in case he might make a mistake, but I went slightly wide at the chicane, jumping over the kerb and when the car landed, I lost control and ended up in the barriers," explained Raikkonen. "My situation in the championship was already rather compromised, so this doesn't really make that much difference but I am unhappy because the team has lost precious points in the constructors' classification."
