Wednesday, September 24 2008 -- Wednesday, September 24, 2008-- The Boston Red Sox and the Cleveland Indians met for the third game in their four game series. The Red Sox managed to come away with the victory, 5-4.
Paul Byrd took the mound for the Red Sox, while Cleveland sent Fausto Carmona, albeit briefly.
Indeed, Fausto was lifted after the first inning, when he gave up four runs to the Sox on an RBI-double by David Ortiz, and RBI singles by Mark Kotsay, Jason Varitek and recent call-up Chris Carter.
J.D. Drew was one of the Red Sox who scored in the first inning. This is newsworthy because Drew has been on the shelf with back spasms for over a month. He played only three innings before being replaced by a pinch runner in the third. (And, is the way when that type of thing happens, the next batter promptly hit into a double play.)
Paul Byrd ended up allowing the Indians back up to it, giving up an RBI single to Josh Barfield in the second, allowing a couple of runs in the third, and the tying run in the fifth, with an RBI single by Victor Martinez.
However, Byrd got out of the inning, and then Mike Timlin, David Aardsma, and Manny Delcarmen combined to shut down the Indians for the rest of the game.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox scored the tying run in the eighth inning, when Jeff Bailey hit a one-out triple off Rafael Perez, and then Mark Kotsay, recently acquired from the Atlanta Braves, doubled him home.
In other stats from the game, Jacoby Ellsbury continued extending his career high hitting streak, which is now at 15 games. Alas, he had no steals in the game. He is at 49 steals, and needs five more to set the record for a Red Sox player. Tommy Harper currently holds the record with 54.
Chris Carter's RBI single in the first inning was also his first Major League RBI.
Dustin Pedroia stole a base, giving him 20 on the season. Coco Crisp also has 20 on the season. So, they, combined with Ellsbury, are the first three Red Sox teammates to have 20 or more steals in a season since 1914.
Red Sox reliever David Aardsma picked up the win, and is now at 4-2 on the season. Paul Byrd remains at 11-12.
For the Indians, Fausto Carmona remains at 8-7. Rafael Perez is now at 4-4.
