Sunday, September 21 2008 -- Sunday, September 21, 2008 -- There are eight teams involved in the WNBA playoffs - four from the Western conference and four from the Eastern conference. They play a best 2 out of 3 series, and the winners then play, first for the Conference Championship and then for the WNBA championship. The WNBA championship is won with a best 3 out of 5 series.
So, on Saturday the San Antonio Silver Stars and the New York Liberty each lost, forcing game threes on them both.
On Sunday, the Los Angeles Sparks and the Detroit Shock had the opportunity to close out their series early and rest for their matchups, but they also lost, evening their series at 1-1 as well.
In the early game, the Detroit Shock lost in overtime to the Indiana Fever.
For the Fever, Tamika Catchings had 27 points and 10 rebounds. Tammy Sutton-Brown added 19 points, Ebony Hoffman 15.
For the Shock, Plenette Pierson had 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists, before she was injured and removed from the game with a little over four minutes to go in the fourth quarter. She'll probably miss the final game in the series, as well.
Pierson and Fever player Ebony Hoffman became tangled up as they went for the ball. Both players were assessed technical fouls, but Pierson could not remain in the game due to injury. In a controversy, Shock coach Bill Laimbeer demanded Hoffman be ejected for deliberately attempting to injure Pierson. Hoffman stated that she did nothing wrong and is confident film of the incident will bear her out.
In the later game, the Los Angeles Sparks had almost as contentious a game wth the Seattle Storm, as the referees "let 'em play," as the saying goes, and the Storm ended up winning by 14 points.
The game took place in Seattle, where the Storm had good luck all season, only losing one game on their own floor.
Sue Bird scored 20 points for the Storm, and Sheryl Swoopes put in 16.
For the Sparks, Lisa Leslie led the team with 11 points and 11 rebounds. DeLisha Milton-Jones added 11 points and rookie Candace Parker put in 10.
