Monday, September 1 2008 -- Monday, September 1, 2008 -- There were only two games in the WNBA on Sunday, August 31.
The Seattle Storm got rained on by the Connecticut Sun, 80-76, and Detroit was shocked by the lowly Chicago Sky, 82-81 in overtime.
The four points the Sun needed to defeat the Storm were given by Jamie Carey, (playing in place of the injured Lindsay Whalen) who hit a jumper with 2 minutes left and a pair of free throws in the closing seconds.
The Sun (19-10) have now taken a one-game lead over the Detroit Shock in the Eastern Conference. They also tied San Antonio for the best record in the league.
With the loss, Seattle (18-10) fell a half-game behind San Antonio for the lead in the Western Conference.
Before the game, the Olympians on the court were honored.
Connecticut coach Mike Thibault was honored as an assistant coach with the women's U.S. Olympic team. The Storm's Sue Bird, Connecticut's Erin Phillips, who played for Australia, and the Sun's Svetlana Abrosimova, who represented Russia were also honored. Seattle forward Lauren Jackson, part of the Australian silver medal team, missed the game after having had ankle surgery last week.
Meanwhile, the Chicago Sky (11-17) won their third straight game, with the help of Candice Dupree, who put in 24 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
In a losing cause, Detroit's Katie Smith scored 23 points to become the third player in WNBA history to reach 5,000 points. She is behind Lisa Leslie (5,853) and Tina Thompson (5,281) on the all-time scoring list.
