Thursday, August 28 2008 -- In the fourth ODI match of the 5 match series between Sri Lanka and India, played on 27th August, 2008 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lankan fast bowler, Chaminda Vaas claimed his 400th One day International cricket. His 400th victim was Yuvraj Singh whom he dismissed for a duck.
The left arm fast medium bowler had debuted in International cricket in 1994. He was also a part of the Sri Lankan cricket team that won the 1996 World Cup.
Commenting on his career so far Vaas said, “As a youngster all I wanted was to play for Sri Lanka” “I remember when I got my first call-up to the national team. It was one-dayer against India in Rajkot, I had just turned 20, and Arjuna [Ranatunga] gave me the new ball ahead of the others. Navjot Sidhu was my first wicket and that was after he had blasted a hundred.”
He also said, “There were a lot of guys more talented than me” “My game was limited but I worked harder. Nothing comes easy to you, you have got to make the most of your talent”
Former fast bowler and Pakistani cricketer, Waqar Younis who is one of the four bowlers along with Vass to have achieved the 400 wicket mark said, “All the years of hard work you put in are for moments like this [reaching 400 wickets]. It's hard to explain in words how you feel. I am getting goose bumps watching Vaas get 400 so you can imagine what it must have felt like when I crossed the milestone”
