Wednesday, August 20 2008 -- Wideout Chris Henry, who was released by the Cincinnati Bengals after being arrested for a fifth time, is back with the team. Henry, who will have to sit out the first four games of 2008 due to a suspension, has been added to the roster to help upgrade Cincinnati’s dwindling pass catching unit.
With injuries to the team’s top two wide receivers—T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Chad Johnson—the Bengals had to do something. It was Bengals’ owner Mike Brown and not head coach Marvin Lewis who decided to give the troubled receiver yet another chance.
Lewis, who was not interested in bringing Henry back, said, "I obviously know that at the end of the day, that the owner has the final say-so on whether or not he wants to give a guy an opportunity or not." Lewis added, "Mike has wanted to give Chris this opportunity, and asks that we do the best job that we can to try to prepare him and get him ready to play football."
Brown had been perceived as being soft on player transgressions until he let Henry go after an incident in March. Henry had been accused of punching a college student and breaking his car window with a beer bottle.
At that time Brown said, "His conduct can no longer be tolerated. The Bengals tried for an extended period of time to support Chris and his potentially bright career.” He went on to observe, "We had hoped to guide him toward an appropriate standard of personal responsibility that this community would support and that would allow him to play in the NFL. ... But those efforts end today, as we move on with what is best for our team."
Brown has apparently changed his mind regarding Henry. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
