When Russians Rule Again!

Wednesday, August 20 2008 -- Women tennis players are just as active in the courts as the men. Russian female players specifically seem to rule the courts these days. They are back on their feet to dominate the courts. One of the popular tennis beaus from Russia who are making wonders in the hardcourts is Elena Dementieva. Though Dementieva was defeated by Serena Williams for the gold in Sydney, she beat Dinara Safina and made herself a room for the number one spot in the Olympics this year. A lot were banking on Safina after winning in Montreal and Los Angeles and reaching the finals in the French Open.

But it was known that Dinara was playing with a pretty tough schedule in the games. The demands of both the singles and doubles category brought her over the edge affecting her performances. Observers saw that she was unexpectedly not in her best shape which not a good time since she was in the Beijing games. Safina instead settled for the silver.

On the other hand, Vera Zvonareva, amazingly got herself a bronze when in fact she merely became part of the singles draw. This was because Maria Sharapova could not join the competition due to a shoulder injury and Vera got in. She wonderfully made her last best shot and won against China’s Li Na.

Svetlana Kuznetsova also made her way to compete with Li Na in the first round when in fact she was the questionable champion during the 2004 U.S. Open. But critiques did recognize that only if women Russian players stay on course, they have the appeal and exceptional skills to take home the U.S Open championship titles to Moscow on top of the medals they have in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
